On Wednesday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) took action by sealing the basement spaces of at least 10 coaching centres and libraries. This was done because these places were not following building rules.
This move came after a tragic incident where three IAS exam students died when the basement of a coaching centre in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar area flooded due to heavy rain.
The areas affected by this sealing action include Shahdara (South Zone), Karol Bagh, and Najafgarh Zone. According to news reports, the MCD sealed four basements used as illegal libraries in Karol Bagh Zone. In Shahdara South Zone, four basements of coaching centres and libraries were sealed, and in Najafgarh Zone, two basements were sealed.
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi stated that the MCD’s drive to seal these places continues, especially in East Delhi, to set an example for coaching centres that break the rules.
The MCD has also issued notices to the coaching centres and property owners for misusing their properties and violating building laws across all zones. They are surveying other properties to identify and address more rule violations.
In addition, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case involving the deaths of the three students. This change was made because the Delhi Police's investigation had issues, and there were concerns about possible corruption among public officials.
