The Delhi government has decided to replace old Gramin Sewa vehicles with electric ones to promote cleaner transportation. The current vehicles are getting old and are not in good shape anymore.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot explained that switching to electric vehicles will help reduce pollution and provide a better travel experience for commuters. The new electric vehicles will be more comfortable and efficient, improving life for people in Delhi.
Here's how the process works for vehicle owners wanting to switch:
- Apply Online: Owners must apply online to buy a new electric vehicle, using their Aadhaar for verification.
- No Dues Certificate (NDC): After applying, the owner will receive a No Dues Certificate within seven days, confirming there are no unpaid taxes or legal issues with the old vehicle.
- Scrap the Old Vehicle: Once they get the NDC, the old vehicle must be taken to a scrapping facility within 15 days. The owner will receive a Certificate of Deposit after the vehicle is scrapped.
- Buy a New Electric Vehicle: With the NDC and Certificate of Deposit, owners can buy a new electric Gramin Sewa vehicle, which can carry six passengers.
- Register the New Vehicle: After purchasing, they need to register the new vehicle using the required documents.
- Permit Renewal: The authorities will verify everything and update the vehicle’s registration to allow it to operate on the same route as the old one.
About Gramin Sewa: Introduced in 2011, these vehicles use clean fuels like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and carry six passengers. They mainly operate in rural areas and certain urban colonies, with over 2,000 in service in Delhi. This move is part of Delhi's effort to promote electric vehicles and reduce pollution.
