Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared some exciting news: Germany is increasing the number of work visas for skilled Indian workers from 20,000 to 90,000 each year. This change means more opportunities for Indian professionals to work in Germany, which is great for both countries.
Meeting Between Leaders
Prime Minister Modi is hosting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for three days. During this time, they are discussing important topics like trade. India and Germany are significant players in the global economy, with India being the fifth largest economy and Germany the third largest.
The Importance of Indian Workers
Chancellor Scholz mentioned that Indian students are now the largest group of foreign students in German universities. Last year, the number of Indians working in Germany increased by 23,000. Scholz sees this talent as a valuable addition to Germany's workforce, highlighting the positive impact of skilled Indian workers on their labor market.
Improvements in Visa Process
Chancellor Scholz also talked about making the visa process easier. This includes using digital tools to speed up applications and create a user-friendly experience. These changes will help skilled workers move to Germany more quickly and easily.
Migration Policies
However, Scholz noted that Germany is also focusing on controlling immigration for people who are not considered skilled workers. He emphasized that while Germany is open to skilled workers, they want to manage who is allowed to come into the country. They are also working to reduce irregular migration and ensure that those without the right to stay are sent back.
Free Trade Agreement Talks
In addition to visa changes, Germany is working on a free-trade agreement with India and the European Union. This agreement aims to improve trade relations and has been in discussions since June 2022, after being paused for over eight years.
Cooperation in Defence and Technology
Both leaders agreed on the importance of collaborating in defence and technology. Scholz expressed a desire to strengthen ties between their militaries and work more closely together in these areas.
Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Scholz will co-chair the seventh Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) at Hyderabad House, where they will continue to discuss these vital issues and strengthen the relationship between India and Germany.
