Darius Visser, a cricketer from Samoa, has set a new record in men's Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket. He broke the record for the most runs scored in a single over during a match against Vanuatu at the T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier in Apia.
In his third T20I game, Visser, who is 28 years old, scored an incredible 132 runs from 62 balls. During the match, he hit six sixes in one over bowled by Nalin Nipiko, scoring 39 runs in that over. This was a remarkable achievement because it's the first time in men's T20Is that a team has scored more than 36 runs in an over. This record was set in the 15th over of Samoa's innings.
Here’s how it happened
Visser hit the first three balls of the over for six runs each, clearing the boundary. Then, there was a no-ball, which means the bowler had not followed the rules properly. On the free hit that followed, Visser also hit another six. He then hit a dot ball (no run scored) because his straight hit hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end. After another no-ball for height, Visser hit the last ball of the over for six as well.
Before this, there were five instances of a team scoring 36 runs in an over in men's T20Is. Notably, India's Yuvraj Singh was the first to hit six sixes in an over in 2007, and other players who did it include West Indies' Kieron Pollard in 2021 and Nepal's Dipendra Singh Airee earlier this year.
Visser's achievement also includes hitting 14 sixes, which is the fifth highest number of sixes in a single innings in men's T20Is. His score of 132 was 75.86% of Samoa’s total runs of 174, which is the highest percentage of runs scored by a single batter in T20I history. The previous record was 75.1% held by Australia’s Aaron Finch.
