UP Govt. Changes Social Media Rules | Life Sentence For Anti-National Posts

The Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy, 2024, created by the state's information department, has been approved by the Uttar Pradesh cabinet.

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Yogi Adityanath, has updated its social media policy. This new rule affects Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.

Strict Penalties for Offensive Content

  • Anti-National Content: Posting content that is against the nation is now a serious crime. It can lead to severe penalties, including up to life imprisonment.
  • Obscene or Defamatory Material: Sharing inappropriate or harmful content can result in criminal charges for defamation.

Handling Advertisements

  • Digital Agency: A new agency named ‘V-Form’ will manage advertisements and content like videos, tweets, posts, and reels.

Payment Limits for Influencers

  • X: Maximum payment is Rs 5 lakh per month.
  • Facebook: Maximum payment is Rs 4 lakh per month.
  • Instagram: Maximum payment is Rs 3 lakh per month.
  • YouTube:
    • Videos: Rs 8 lakh
    • Shorts: Rs 7 lakh
    • Podcasts: Rs 6 lakh
    • Other Content: Rs 4 lakh

Government’s View

Cabinet minister Anil Rajbhar stated that the policy aims to address misuse of social media and also provides new opportunities for those working in digital media.
