The Union Cabinet has approved a significant package worth Rs 13,966 crore to support agriculture and improve food security across India. The decision was made during a meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the aim of helping farmers and boosting the agricultural sector.
Seven Major Projects Approved
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Cabinet has approved seven key projects to improve the lives of farmers and increase their income. These projects include initiatives related to digital agriculture, food security, education, horticulture, livestock health, and natural resource management.
Digital Agriculture Mission
The Digital Agriculture Mission was approved with a budget of Rs 2,817 crore. This mission aims to modernize agriculture using digital technologies. The government plans to invest a total of Rs 20,817 crore to build a digital infrastructure for agriculture, based on successful pilot projects.
Food and Nutritional Security
A Rs 3,979 crore plan was approved to ensure food and nutritional security in the country. This plan focuses on reducing hunger and malnutrition by making nutritious food more available to the population.
Agricultural Education and Management
The Cabinet approved a Rs 2,291 crore plan to improve agricultural education and management. This initiative aims to train farmers and provide them with the necessary skills to increase productivity and income.
Horticulture Plan
A Rs 860 crore horticulture plan was approved to promote the growth of fruits, vegetables, and other crops. This plan is part of the government's strategy to diversify agriculture and encourage sustainable farming practices.
Livestock Health Management and Production
The Cabinet sanctioned Rs 1,702 crore for improving livestock health management and production. This initiative will enhance animal health services and boost productivity in the dairy and meat sectors, leading to better income for livestock farmers.
Strengthening Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)
The government allocated Rs 1,202 crore to strengthen Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), which play an essential role in promoting modern farming techniques and providing support to farmers.
Natural Resource Management
A Rs 1,115 crore project was approved for natural resource management. This project will focus on preserving water, soil, and other essential resources to ensure the long-term sustainability of agriculture in India.
Infrastructure Projects Approved
The Cabinet also approved important infrastructure projects that will benefit both the economy and agriculture:
- Rail Connectivity Between Mumbai and Indore: A new railway line, stretching 309 km, was approved at a cost of Rs 18,036 crore. This line will provide the shortest rail route between Mumbai and Indore and is expected to be completed by 2028-29.
- Semiconductor Manufacturing Unit in Gujarat: Under the India Semiconductor Mission, the Cabinet approved a new semiconductor unit by KaynesSemicon Pvt Ltd in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 3,300 crore. This project will strengthen India's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
